Dry and chapped lips affect many people, especially during the cold season, making everyday actions like laughing or eating uncomfortable. Often, the causes remain unknown, and poor lip care worsens the problem.
The causes of dry lips are multiple and can result from both external and internal factors. A main cause is lack of moisture, which occurs due to insufficient fluid intake or excessive fluid loss, for example through sweating.
External factors such as cold winter air, dry indoor heating, and intense sun exposure also contribute to dehydration. In summer, lips lack the pigment cells that could protect them from UV rays. Even salty seawater can draw out moisture.
Illnesses such as colds or infections, for example with the herpes virus or fungi, can also lead to dry or chapped lips. A deficiency in vitamins or minerals, particularly iron, zinc, and vitamins B and E, can impair skin regeneration, making it more fragile.
Even stress can play a role, as it reduces saliva production, leaving the lips inadequately hydrated.
Finally, poor lip care can lead to dryness. Lipsticks or care products containing fragrances and colorants dry out the delicate skin. Instead, products rich in nutrients like hyaluronic acid and natural ingredients should be used.
But how can we properly protect the lips and make them shine again?
